Thanks everyone for your input. I had hoped for this kind of discussion to come out of that kind of question.
Well, it is a discussion database, isn't it?
As far as connection pooling, JDBC and other technical issues go, I am aware that there are limitations in Domino's Servlet engine.
Compared to virtually all other J2EE engines "out there", free or not free, it really doesn't measure up.
But that aside, it can still fill a need.
As I mentioned, there are sites suffering from poor performance today, using standard Domino forms, views etc.
These sites could benefit a lot from re-writing the most crucial parts to servlets, run by the Domino Servlet engine, and really get performance enhancements.
True, they will (probably) hit the roof again some time, but at least they can delay that.
And they will not have to bother with installment, customizing, configuration, and maintenance issues (= costs).
For that kind of site, and that kind of customer, the Domino Servlet engine is a cheap way to implement technique that really makes a difference.
Banks, Insurance companies, and other huge sites may well look at other solutions, but that's only because the needs are different and the time and money they can invest in better technology is more.
